“We know what needs to be done. We just need the courage to do it,” said the President of the World Water Council, Ben Braga, on 6 March in the Special Thematic Session on Water and Disasters at the United Nations in New York. In the presence of the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, he encouraged the world community to change the approach to water related disasters and act collectively to anticipate the challenges. “The post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals should indicate how to treat this issue as a pre-requisite for further sustainable and equitable development in the future,” said President Braga. The session – an initiative of the Secretary General and his Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation – gathered the world’s experts and high level representatives to share experiences and discuss ways forward towards global actions.
