Friday 6 December 2024, Geneva, Switzerland.

Water is essential for life, transcending borders and uniting humanity, yet it faces unprecedented challenges such as climate instability, population growth, and urbanization, said Loïc Fauchon, President of the World Water Council, at the High-Level Experts and Leaders Panel on Water and Disasters. These pressures exacerbate vulnerabilities, threatening peace, stability, and human development.

Fauchon highlighted the dual threats of floods and droughts, citing examples from Spain, California, and Pakistan, which demonstrate the need for robust infrastructure, land use planning, and early warning systems. Demographic shifts further strain water resources, with urban growth, such as Kinshasa’s booming population, demanding significant investment in water supply and treatment.

To address these challenges, Fauchon emphasized three pillars: knowledge, including technological innovations like desalination and water recycling; governance, through decentralized and community-driven approaches; and finance, advocating for mechanisms such as debt cancellation and blended financing for water projects.
He underscored priorities like water for health, food security, and biodiversity, advocating integrated, cross-sectoral solutions. Fauchon called for “hydro diplomacy” to foster cooperation over shared water resources, urging education and youth engagement to build a peaceful, sustainable future, making water a unifying cause in the spirit of Bandung.
