Three major topics, dozens of concrete proposals
Marseille, France, 11 September 2019 – Through the presence of its President Loic Fauchon, the World Water Council has continued its worldwide engagement to raise political awareness on emerging water issues. For two weeks, the Council President carried the Voice of Water to major international and regional gatherings and met high-level politicians and decision-makers from around the world to push for higher consideration of water challenges in the global agenda.
The themes addressed included water for food, digital solutions for humans and nature, and financing water.
Water to feed the world
World Water Council President Loïc Fauchon addressed high-level dignitaries and thousands of delegates gathered in Bali during the opening ceremony of the 3rd World Irrigation Forum (WIF3), organized by the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID), a founding member of the Council. The President emphasized that adapted technical solutions in agriculture can help ease pressures on water resources that are already vulnerable to growing populations and climate evolution.
Digital responses for humans and nature
Korea International Water Week opened with strong political presence from the Minister of Environment of Korea, as well as Ministers from Senegal, Algeria and Sri Lanka, the Mayor of Daegu, the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly and other esteemed participants. President Fauchon made recommendations on preserving the balance between humans and nature and emphasized that instead of a digital divide, technology must serve humankind. He further reminded the importance of political will during the meeting of the Water Leaders Roundtable, in which over 30 high-level politicians and decision-makers from around the world participated.

Practical proposals to spur financing for water
At the start of his journey, at World Water Week, President Fauchon called for political leaders to help unlock capital for investments for ambitious water projects. “A strong signal of commitment needs to come from all levels of political governance to create the right environment that will reassure investors and attract capital.” The World Water Council proposes ten practical responses to improve financing for water.
