The World Water Council (WWC) is thrilled to announce its new partnership with ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, marking a significant step in strengthening water governance, security, and sustainability worldwide. This collaboration aligns with our shared commitment to addressing pressing global water challenges, enhancing sustainable water and sanitation management, and advancing multilevel governance to ensure equitable access to water for all.
On January 9, 2025, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Loïc Fauchon, President of the World Water Council, and Gino Van Begin, Secretary General of ICLEI, officially launching this promising partnership. The two organizations will work together to foster a comprehensive, multilevel approach to water governance, combining the expertise and networks of local, regional, and global stakeholders to create lasting solutions for water-related issues.
This collaboration is particularly timely as the world faces unprecedented water challenges, driven by climate change, rapid urbanization, and growing populations. By bringing together ICLEI’s network of local governments and the WWC’s global perspective on water governance, we aim to elevate water as a critical global priority and to ensure sustainable and equitable development.
In 2025, we are hosting a series of webinars on how local governments are addressing water challenges—whether it’s too little, too much, or too polluted (sometimes all of these!). Political and technical representatives from cities around the world will share their efforts to build water resilience.
We’re also excited to announce a photography competition highlighting local water issues and innovative solutions.
